Max is a history teacher. He is a widower, Jewish, a recovering alcoholic and has taught American Studies at Chadwick College [an all-women school] for 23 years. Proclaimed Professor of the Year in 1987, Max was turned down for a prestigious promotion in 2001 and instead got appointed as Chairman of the Department as compensation. Max never served in the Vietnam War but ponders the fact that someone else went in his place. Despite the pressures of his job and life in general the two things that keep Max going are his children Nell and Lester.
