Minbari - Humanoid race with bone-like structures
growing from their
head featured on the sci-fi series BABYLON 5 SYN/1994-98. The
primary Minbari's onboard space station Babylon 5 were Ambassador
Satai Delenn (Mira Furlan) and her aid Lennier (Billy Mumy). The
Minbari halted their War with the Humans after they realized that
the souls of their race were taking up residence in the Humans on
Earth. Since Minbari do not kill Minbari, they stopped the conflict
to preserve the sanctity of their beliefs. The Minbari live to
attain perfection in themselves physically, mentally, spiritually,
and emotionally.
The Minbari society is divided into caste systems.
There are three castes: the religious, warrior, and worker. The
five primary warrior clans are Star Riders (the oldest clan); Moon
Shields; Wind Swords; Night Walkers; and the Fire Wings. The
Minbari Religious Clans include The House of Mir; and The Third
Fane (or House) of Chudomo.
The Minbari highest social belief is
that there is no greater goal than to serve others. They also do
not lie. When they sleep they rest at a 45 degree angle for
sleeping horizontally would be to temp death. To show respect,
Minbari look down when in the presence of a high ranking Minbari.
When a Minbari dies, their soul forms a "pool" from which new
Minbari are formed. The Minbari's are ruled by a leader called "The
Chosen One" who oversees the members of the Grey Council (nine
persons; three taken from each caste). When they convene, they
proclaim "Summoned, I come. In Valen's name, I take the place that
has been prepared for me. I am Grey. I stand between the candle and
the star. We are Grey. We stand between the darkness and the
light."
The Grey Council was formed by Valen over one thousand
years ago to safeguard and unite the Minbari. The warrior clan
called the Anla-shok (or Rangers) were formed to help combat the
darkness of the universe.
