Pall
Mall Award - A cash award of $500 was given to the
reporter whose story was highlighted on the anthology series THE
BIG STORY/NBC/1949-57, a long running documentary drama program
based on actual case histories of journalists who sought out
corruption, crimes and scandals. The Pall Mall award was presented
by the show's sponsor, the American Tobacco Company. Later changed
to the "The Big Story Award."
TRIVIA NOTE: Pall Mall brand
cigarettes were introduced in 1899 by the Butler & Butler Company.
They sold the company in 1907 to the American Tobacco Company. In 1994,
American Tobacco Company was purchased by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation
who later though a merger in 2004 became R. J. Reynolds
Tobacco Company . Pall Mall's slogan is "Wherever Particular
People Congregate" It's package design
sports a coat of arms and the latin phrases "Per Aspera Ad Astra" ("Through Difficulty to the Stars") and "In Hoc Signo Vinces" ( "In
this sign, you will conquer").
