La
Strada Bicycle - Italian racing bicycle owned
by Dave Stohler (Shaun Cassidy) the main character in the sitcom
BREAKING AWAY/ABC/1980-81. Set in the town of Bloomington,
Indiana, the series follows the misadventures of four buddies
who recently graduated from high school and are, each in their
own way, trying to discover what path to travel in life.
Dave
has become a bicycling enthusiast. He uses his $1,200 La Stada
bicycle (which he won) to compete in regional competitions and
aspires to the international cycling circuit. Dave's
conservative father, Ray Stohler (Vincent Gardenia) thinks his
son's dreams are risky and suggests he should settle down and
work at the family used car lot. But Dave's Mom Evelyn (Barbara
Barrie) knows that Dave's dreams are important and she does her
best to support her sons goals, despite her husband's
reservations on the subject.
Although not as focused,. Dave's
friends, too, try to find out their life's purpose. And they'll
find their reason for being, if they're not side tracked by the
pompous fraternity students from the nearby university who call
the local boys "Cutters (a derogatory term derived from town's
working class history and its quarries which employed "Stone
Cutters").
Dave's close friends included Jackie Earle Haley as
Moocher; Thomas Bray as Cyril; Tom Wiggins as Mike. Also
appearing were John Ashton as Roy and Larry Larson as Greg
Prince.
This short-lived series is based on the movie Breaking
Away (1979) starring Dennis Christopher as Dave, a blond
teenager who loved opera, spoke Italian and aspired to be as
good as his heroes from the Cinzano racing team from Italy.
Barbara Barrie as Dave's mom and Jackie Earle Haley as Moocher
and John Ashton as Roy reprised their film roles for the TV
series.
