The Mimi - Exploratory vessel
featured on
the education series THE VOYAGE OF THE MIMI/PBS/1984. The Mimi
is a converted French tuna trawler outfitted as a modern
ocean-going vessel. Skippered by
Captain Clement Granville (Peter Marston), a scientist at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, and a crew of teenagers, The Mimi acted as
seagoing platform where youngsters examined marine life (including
humpback whales) living off
the coast of Maine. A young Ben Affleck played the role of
Granville's son, C.T.
On episode “Tracking the Whale,” the Mimi is caught in a storm
and disabled. In “Shipwrecked,” the Mimi is damaged by a storm and
beached on an island.
A sequel series THE SECOND VOYAGE OF THE MIMI aired in 1988
with Ben Affleck reprising his role as C.T. Crandall.
