Broadcast Firsts

Concerts (Symphonic) - The first symphonic concert to be broadcast on television was transmitted on March 20, 1948. At 5:00 P.M. conductor Eugene Ormandy raised his baton and lead a members performance of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra which was carried over the Columbia Broadcasting System affiliate station WCAU-TV in Philadelphia, Pa.

Arturo Toscanini followed at 6:30 P.M. conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra in an all-Wagner concert. This was broadcast over the National Broadcasting Company station WNBT in New York City.
