Game Shows - The first NBC
game show was called FACE TO FACE (6/9/46-1/26/47). It featured a female
emcee named "Sugar" and artist who sketched portraits of persons derived
from verbal clues.
The first DuMont game show was CASH AND CARRY
(6/20/46-7/1/47). Set in a grocery store filled with "Libby" products,
contestants were given questions worth from five to fifteen dollars.
The first CBS game show was IT''S A GIFT (1/29/46-7/6/46).
Hosted by John Reed King, this game show had contestants answering questions
for prizes.
The first ABC game show was MOVIELAND QUIZ
(8/12/48-11/9/48). The program made contestants identify titles and stars of
motion pictures for money. Broadcast from Philadelphia, it was first hosted
by Arthur Q. Bryan and then later by Ralph Dumke.
WINNER TAKE ALL/CBS/NBC/1948-52 hosted by Bill Collyer, Bill
Cullen, Barry Gray was the first Goodson-Todman game show; the first game
show to use a buzzer; the first to employ a lock out devise; and the first
to create a champion contestants
TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES/CBS/SYN/1950-74 was the first program
to win an Emmy Award for the Best Game and Audience Participation show in
1950.
PASSWORD/CBS/ABC/NBC/1961-84 was the first game show to pair
celebrities with studio audience contestants.
THE DIAMOND HEAD GAME/SYN/1975 hosted by Bob Eubanks was the
first game show to be taped in Hawaii.
BAFFLE/NBC/1973-74, hosted by Dick Enberg, was the first
game show to use neon lights on their studio sets.
FANDANGO produced by the Nashville Network Cable in 1983
hosted by Bill Anderson, was the first game show on a country music
broadcast from Nashville.
BARGAIN HUNTERS/ABC/1987 hosted by Peter Tomarken was the
first combination game show and home shopping series.
