Psychiatry Series - THE CASES OF EDDIE DRAKE/CBS/1949 was the first prime time medical series to feature a (criminal) psychologist. The program costarred Patricia Morrison as Karen Gayle, a female psychologist who works with private detective Eddie Drake in New York City.

The first medical series to deal with the science (some say pseudoscience) of psychiatry was THE ELEVENTH HOUR/NBC/1962-64 starring Wendell Corey as Dr. Theodore Bassett who attempted to help people cope with the pressures and stress of everyday life.

In the 1970s, real-life psychiatrist Dr. Joyce Brothers appeared as herself on ABC's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. She was called to Llanview to help Meredith Lord Wolek with postpartum depression. Dr. Joyce was the first real psychiatrist to appear on a daytime soap opera. See also "Medical Series" and "Nurse Series"
