Addams Family Halloween - The bizarre sitcom THE ADDAMS FAMILY featured Gomez and Morticia Addams who
lived in a spooky Victorian mansion at 000 Cemetery Lane. The Addams enjoyed the
Halloween holiday above all others. Each year on October 31, the family gathered
together and participated in all sorts of fun games like carving pumpkins with
really big sharp knives, and trimming the holiday scarecrow. Instead of bobbing
for apples, Uncle Fester bobbed for "Live Crabs" or "Grenades"
One year, the
Addams had special guests - two bank robbers whose car ran out of gas. When they
tried to hide in the Addams family mansion, they were mistaken for trick or treaters by Gomez & Morticia and invited to join in the Halloween fun. But after
seeing all the crazy things in the Addams' household, the robbers took off
running and were later caught by the police. When Morticia heard they were "sent
up the river" she remarked, "They needed a vacation."
The 1977 TV movie
special "Halloween with the Addams Family" had Gomez's look-alike brother Pancho
(Henry Darrow) visit and tell the legend of Cousin Sly who distributes gifts
and carves pumpkins during this special time of the year..
On the TV remake THE NEW ADDAMS FAMILY/SYN/1998-99 the
Addams children Pugsley and Wednesday go out trick or treating dressed in the
most horrifying costumes them could image, namely movie critics Siskel & Ebert.
As part of the holiday tradition, the Addams liked to read a favorite poem (a
parody of "Twas the Night Before Christmas). The text follows:
'Tis Halloween night and all through the Mansion
Many creatures were stirring in their own grisly fashion
Uncle Fester was hung in the closet upstairs
While Grandmama snoozed in her favorite chair.
Wednesday curled up dreaming Halloween dreams
Too sleepy to hear Pugsley's bone-chilling screams.
Lurch settled in for his Halloween nap
While Thing dressed for bed in his P.J.'s and cap.
On goblins, on demons, on creatures of sin.
On Comet, on Cupid, on Donner and Blitzen ...
It's almost that time for treating and tricking.
For haunting and scaring and screaming and kicking.
And the night air was filled with horror and gloom
As wolves outside howled at the moon.
It's the one time of year when everything's right.
Happy Halloween to you, and to all a good fright.
