Franklin “Frank” Delano Lambert is a
divorced contractor. His ex-wife ran off to be a Las Vegas lounge singer.
Carol Foster [née Baker/Williams] is a widowed beautician. Frank and Carol
met while on separate vacations in Jamaica and impetuously got married.
Arriving home from their honeymoon, Frank and Carol merged their
respective families and moved into Frank’s home. |

Frank’s children included Alicia
a.k.a. “Al” [age 12], John Thomas “J. T. [age 15], and Brendon. Carol’s
kids Dana [age 15], Karen, and Mark Archibald rounded out the brood. The
Lambert’s survived financially with Frank operating Lambert Construction
and Carol running Carol’s Beauty Boutique from their home with the help of
her mother Ivy Baker and her sister Penny Baker.
On occasion, friction arose between the blended family
members. Dana, Carol’s oldest [born 1/15/76] was at odds with Frank’s 15
year-old son John Thomas. She called him a “pea-brained idiot.” He
nicknamed her “The Undateable.” Alicia, the tomboy thought teen model
Karen was a wimp while the Mark, the worry-wart brain of the family
tussled from time to time with Brendan, the carefree one in the group. But
overall, they slowly turned into one family unit. Adding to that unit was
Frank’s 19-year-old nephew, a spaced-out demolition worker who showed up
one day and began to live in his van that he parked in the driveway.
Cody’s free spirit rubbed Dana’s meticulous personality the wrong way. She
thought Cody was a “brain-dead idiot.’ He, on the other hand, thought she
was “babe.”

The Lambert Family in their kitchen
Educationally, the kids went to various schools. Dana
and Karen attended Lincoln Elementary School. Alicia attended Miss Daisy’s
Ducky Room Preschool. Mark attended Canyon Elementary. Dana, Karen, Alicia
and J.T. attended Port Washington High [Frank’s alma mater]. Karen was a
cheerleader for the Wildcats football team. J.T. was on the track team.
Dana later transferred to East Wisconsin University. Cody attended
University of Wisconsin and belonged to Delta Delta Beta fraternity.
To earn money Dana worked at the 50’s Cafe as the
assistant manager and J.T. worked there as a waiter named Cubby and
sometimes worked as a shampoo boy in his mother‘s home salon and later as
a car salesman. Karen worked as a teen model at Peterson’s Department
Store. Alicia worked at the Mr. Chips cookie shop in the mall and then got
a job as a waitress called Peggy Sue at the 50’s Cafe.
For fun, Dana studied, Karen shopped, Alicia played
Beavers little league baseball and rehearsed to be an actress. J.T. chased
the ladies, hung out at the Burger Palace and had a cable access program
called “J.T. and Cody’s World.” Cody opened an exercise club called “Body
by Cody” and Brendan and Mark hung out at the Burger Barn. When Frank
needed a night out he drove his GMC pickup to the Mallard Lodge. Frank and
Carol later gave birth to a daughter named Lilly Foster Lambert. NOTE: The
Brandon character disappeared from the family after the birth of Lily who
quickly grew to be five years of age within one season.
Carol Lambert: Frank, don't you want another child?
Frank Lambert:
Carol, I don't want more, I want less.
I'd trade
two of them in for golf clubs.
STEP BY STEP
(Opening Theme Song Lyrics)
The dream, wide broken
Seemed like all was lost
What would be the future
Could you pay the cost
You wonder,
Will there ever be
a second time around?
Woah-a, woah-a
When the tears are over
And the moment has come
Say "My lord,
I think I found someone"
And no one would be better
To be putting it together
For the second time around
We got the woman and man
We got the kids in a clan
Only time will tell
If all these dreams fit under one umbrella
Step by step
Day by day
A fresh start over
A different hand to play
The deeper we fall
The stronger we stay
And we'll be better
The second time around
Step by step
Day by day (Day by day)
A fresh start over
A different hand to play
Only time will tell
But you know what they say
We'll make it better
The second time around
