Beulah - The buzzer on
the game show TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES/CBS/NBC/1950-58/SYN/1966-74
was called "Beulah." Contestants were asked silly questions designed
to stump the listener. When answered wrong or not answered in time,
the buzzer sounded. Losers were then forced to pay the "consequence"
by performing a silly stunt. Based on the parlor games "Forfeits"
and "Fine or Superfine," the series was created by Ralph Edwards on
radio in 1940. TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES was the first program to win an
Emmy Award for the Best Game and Audience Participation show in
1950.
TRIVIA NOTE: "Beulah" was also the
name of TVs favorite black maid (Ethel Waters/Louise Beavers) on the
sitcom BEULAH/ABC/1950-53.
