The Arsenio Hall Show - In 1993 late night talk show host Arsenio Hall offered to host his show from the home of anyone in America who could send him a video convincing him that they were the right family for his show. The winning entry of the "In The House" contest came from Fred and Selena Payton who promised Arsenio a home-cooked crab meat dinner. On Friday August 13, 1993 THE ARSENIO HALL SHOW moved its entire production staff to the Payton home at Derwood, Maryland in Montgomery County near Washington, D.C. Called "Woodstock in the Hood," this special edition extravaganza featured Patti LaBelle cooking in the kitchen; Johnny Gill singing in the backyard; and comedian Bobcat Goldthwait cracking up the crowd of over 1500 friends and neighbors in attendance. Upon seeing the Payton's large backyard Arsenio commented "I'm glad to see some black man got his 40 acres and a mule." TRIVIA NOTE: A similar contest called "Big Back Yard Barbecue" was held annually by the VH-1 music channel. On Labor Day Weekend, September 7, 1998, their winner in Staten Island, New York, won the right to have a popular rock group perform in their backyard. They chose the rock trio "The B-52's."
