Little House CookbookLittle House Cookbook - Inspired by the Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie books Barbara M. Walker wrote The Little House Cookbook: Frontier Foods from Laura Ingalls Wilders Classic Stories (illustrations by Garth Williams). The 240 page cook book contains over 100 authentic recipes for frontier foods collected from Laura Ingalls-Wilder's classic little House books including Laura's wedding cake recipe - It makes 43 pounds and keeps for twenty years. The book is divided into sections: "Food in the Little Houses", "The Cook's Domain", "Staples from the Country Store", "Foods from Tilled Fields", "Foods from Gardens and Orchards", "Foods from the Barnyard", and "Thirst Quenchers and Treats." Recipes found n the book include such yummy dishes as "Fried Salt Pork with Gravy: Drippings," "Johnny-Cake," "Spit Roasted Wild Duck," various types of pickles, "Sun-dried Wild Fruit,", "Huckleberry Pie," "Green Pumpkin Pie," "Molasses-on-Snow Candy," and "Apple Core Vinegar," among other frontier delicacies. The television series THE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE/NBC/1974-83 set near the town of Walnut Grove, Plum Creek, Minnesota was based on these same books about life on the Kansas Prairie in the 1870s. Melissa Gilbert played the young Laura Wilder on the program.
