The
Carver - Psychopathic serial rapist and mutilator featured on the
plastic surgery medical drama NIP/TUCK/FX/2003+ Garbed in a black body
suit and wearing a white plastic face with a blank expression, The Carver
stalks his victims, attacks them from behind, injects them with a
paralyzing agent ("a rarified form of mivacurium chloride"), gives them a
short lecture in a distorted voice as they lie incapacitated in a waking
coma and then destroys their beauty with a knife by carving a smile into
their face. And, when he's finished slicing, The Carver rapes his victim
(making sure to use a condom).
The Carver thinks of himself as an artist and humanitarian. He mutilates
using the rationale "Beauty is a curse on the world. It keeps us from
seeing who the real monsters are" and he considers plastic surgeons
"Destroyers of his canvas." The Carver targets, in particular, Dr. Sean
McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and his partner, Dr. Christian Troy (Julian
McMahon), two Miami-based plastic surgeons who have been responsible for
reversing the trauma and disfigurement of The Carver's so-called
"masterpieces".
Over time, The Carver's torture spree escalated to murder when he kills
Rhea Reynolds (Tara Buck) and frames Dr. Christian Troy for the deed. He
later kidnaps Kimber Henry (Kelly Carlson) as she was about to marry
Christian and forces her to write a Dear John letter to cover her
disappearance.
Born in Northern Maine, The Carver is single, Catholic, and a Scorpio. He
has no desire to have children but he does like the early 1980s
New-York-based disco dance music group, InDeep.
The Carver's favorite films are Gone with the Wind, Freaks and Badlands.
He prefers to watch the ABC TV show According to Jim and his personal
heroes are Rasputin, The Dali Lama, Joan Crawford, and George
Steinbrenner. His favorite book is "The Confessions of St. Augustine."
The Carver finally creates his greatest masterpiece as he performs a mass
mutilation on the members of a sorority house. At which time, The Carver's
identity was revealed as Dr. Quentin Costa (Bruno Campos) who turns out to
be a "freakin' eunuch who has to rape people with a strap-on to feel like
a man."
The Carver died from a bullet in the back administered by a Kit McGraw (Rhona
Mitra), a female police detective (an alleged Carver victims) just as he
was about to mutilate Dr. Sean McNamara and Christian Troy whom Costa had
taken prisoners. But his murder was a ruse.
The Carver had rigged a vest with an explosive blood bag and he escaped
from the coroner's office aided by his sister, Katherine (a.k.a. "Kit").
The Carver and his sister are now at large at a sunny resort in Spain,
drinking sangrias and eyeing their next victim. ("A Doctor's work is never
done.")
TRIVIA NOTE: To foster interest in the character, the FX network created a
website at www.myspace.com/thecarver where fans of the show could post
messages and receive responses from The Carver. Forums let fans debate The
Carver's identity. According to the website, The Carver admits:
"I am a private person, but I seek compassion, I yearn to be understood,
to be appreciated. Do you want to come over to my house and play? To see
what I see? This is my place – the dark room where I can whisper softly in
your ear. My secret garden where I can explain what you have seen – to
tell you what I have done – and what I plan to do. My carvings are my art,
but this is my manifesto. Tread lightly, though my children – as poor Icarus learned, if you fly too close to the Sun, you might get burned."
