Arthur
Murray Party, The - The musical
variety program THE ARTHUR MURRAY
PARTY/ABC/DUM/CBS/NBC/1950-60, that first appeared as a summer
replacement series, aired in half-hour and one-hour formats. It
featured songs, comedy sketches, dance contests/instructions and starred
ballroom dancers Arthur Murray, his wife, Kathryn as the show's hostess
and The Arthur Murray Dancers.
In essence, the program was nothing
more than a lengthy commercial inviting viewers to join the Murray's
national chain of Arthur Murray Dance Studios.
A regular segment on the program enabled the viewers to win two free
lessons at their nearest Arthur Murray Dance Studio by mailing in a
postcard that correctly identified the "Mystery Dance" seen on each
program.
At the close of each show Kathryn Murray reminded the viewing audience,
"Till then, to put a little fun in your life, try dancing."
TRIVIA NOTE:
An earlier TV series DANCING ON AIR/NBC/1947 featured instructors from the
Fred Astaire Studios who taught dancing over the show's five-week run.
