Dancing Doctor, The - Nickname of Dr. Beverly
Howard-Crusher (Gates McFadden), the chief medical officer onboard the 24th
century starship Enterprise-D on the sci-fi series STAR TREK: THE NEXT
GENERATION/SYN/1987-94. Her nickname first appeared on episode No. 85 "Data's
Day" when Beverly offered to teach Data the android how to dance.
Beverly earned "The Dancing Doctor" moniker for winning a Tap & Jazz
dance competition at a Saint Louis dance academy in her earlier days.
Although proud of her dancing abilities, she avoided broadcasting her
nickname to the crew. Beverly did, however, pursue her love of acting and
participated in various theatre performances aboard the starship, including
"Cyrano de Bergerac," "The Pirates of Penzance," "Frame of Mind," and "Something
for Breakfast."
Actress Gates McFadden began her career in New York City (she grew up in Ohio) as a
stage actress and dancer and later as a director and choreographer.
