Sherlock - Actual
name of the Basset hound to which Elvis Presley sang "Hound Dog" ("You
ain't nothin' but a hound dog, cryin' all the time...") on the July 1,
1956 episode of THE STEVE ALLEN SHOW.
Comedian Steve Allen hired the talents of a young and upcoming singer
Elvis Presley to perform on his program. Allen was locked in a ratings war
with Ed Sullivan at the time and thought Presley would attract new
viewers.
For the show, Elvis dressed in white tie and tails and sang "Hound Dog"
(without shaking) to Sherlock the dog who wore a top hat. Elvis and RCA
used Sherlock for publicity in the 1950s.
