Cartoon Canines

Underdog - Superhero dog featured on the animated cartoon UNDERDOG/NBC/CBS/1964-73.

'There's no need to fear. Underdog is here!

Underdog (voice of Wally Cox) is the alter ego of a humble, mild-mannered dog named Shoeshine Boy who lives in Washington, D.C.

Wearing a red monogrammed shirt sporting a large letter U, and a blue cape, Underdog soars through the air to battle the likes Batty Man, Captain Marblehead, Fearo the Ape, underworld boss Riff Raff and evil scientist Simon Bar Sinister.

Underdog's arsenal of powers include super-strength, super-hearing and X-ray vision. Our heroic canine's catchphrase is "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!"

Underdog's girlfriend is TV reporter Sweet Polly Purebred (voice of Norma McMillan) who cries "Oh where, Oh where has my Underdog gone?" in times of crisis. Sensing her peril Underdog proclaims "Hark! When Polly calls, I am not slow -- It's Hip! Hip! Hip! and away I go!"

Opening Sequence & Theme Song Lyrics

There's no need to fear. Underdog is here.

Time again for the UNDERDOG SHOW starring that champion of champions... Underdog!

One of the city's most humble and lovable characters was Shoeshine Boy.

Shoeshine Boy:

All finished sir.

Thanks Shoeshine boy. You're humble and loveable

Shoeshine Boy:

Bless you, sir.

Little did anyone know that whenever there was a call for help ["Help!...Help! Help!"] Shoeshine boy became in real life Underdog.

Chorus of Singers:

When criminals in this world appear
and break the laws that they should fear
and frighten all who see or hear
the cry goes up both far and near for
UNDERDOG Underdog.
Speed of lightning, roar of thunder.
Fighting all who vow to plunder
Underdog! Underdog! Underdog!
