Scooby DooScooby-Doo - Cowardly Great Dane dog created by Hanna-Barbera Productions for the cartoon series SCOOBY-DOO, WHERE ARE YOU?/CBS/1969-76. Scooby-Doo (voice of Don Messick) reluctantly helped a group of four high school students (Fred, Velma, Daphne and beatnik Shaggy) solve mysteries of the supernatural kind amidst haunted mansions, slimy swamps, and dark caves where some sort of monsters dwelled. Scooby Doo's dim-witted country cousin Scooby Dum debuted on THE SCOOBY-DOO/DYNOMUTT HOUR/ABC/1978. In 1979, the series' creators introduced Scooby's brave little nephew called Scrappy. The Scooby character has appeared in a variety of series. During the 1984-86 seasons THE NEW SCOOBY-DOO MYSTERIES, SCARY SCOOBY FUNNIES, THE 13 GHOSTS OF SCOOBY-DOO and SCOOBY'S MYSTERY FUNHOUSE graced the airwaves. A PUP NAMED SCOOBY-DOO/ABC/1988 chronicled the formative years of this cowardly canine detective. TRIVIA NOTE: Reportedly, CBS exec Fred Silverman got "Scooby's name from listening to the "scooby-dooby-doo" lyrics sung by Frank Sinatra in his hit song  "Strangers in the Night."   See also NICKNAMES - "The Scooby Gang" and CATCHPHRASES - "Zoinks"
