Reckless - Brown hound dog on the rural
drama THE WALTONS/CBS/1972-81. Reckless was the family dog of the
Waltons, a large rural family living in the Blue Ridge Mountains near
Jefferson County, Virginia during the days of the Depression.
On episode
#10 "The Legend" Reckless is accidentally shot by a man named Tip Harrison
while on a fox hunting trip with John-Boy Walton (Richard Thomas).
On
episode No. 182 "The Journal" Reckless becomes ill and a discussion ensues
as to whether the dog should be put to sleep. Later, an aging and ailing
Reckless chases a rabbit into the woods and then quietly lays down to die
amidst the comfort and lush green of Walton's Mountain.
Throughout the
series, Reckless was referred to as both male (earlier episodes) and a
female.
The original Reckless (owned by Hal Driscoll and Bill
Koehler/trained by Genny Kerns) was a redbone hound named Prince. However,
several dogs played the role of Reckless over the course of the series.
