Boots lived with Squad 51, a Los Angeles County Fire Department Rescue Division. One day, he showed up at the station house and the guys decided to adopt him and to make Boots their official mascot (during the 2-5 seasons).

Once, Boots even aided in a rescue mission by sniffing out an injured hiker for paramedics John Gage and Roy Desoto. 

After Boots there was Henry, a lazy Bassett hound whose only activity was lounging about on the stationhouse couch.

A half-hour animated version, EMERGENCY+4 aired on NBC's Saturday morning lineup from 1973 through 1976.
