Buck the Malamute - Gentle-natured
Yukon canine featured in the 13-part one-hour
action adventure series CALL OF THE WILD/ANI/2000-01.
Stolen from San Francisco and transported to the
Yukon to become a sled Dog, Buck battled the
frozen frontiers of the North until he becomes
the property of 15-year-old Miles Challenger
(Shane Meier), the son of Adoley (Rachel
Hayward) who after the death of her husband,
married John Thornton (Nick Mancuso).
Newly adopted by the Thornton's family, Buck
encounters friends and foe alike in the Yukon
territory of 1898.
The dog playing the role of Buck on the TV
series is called Kavic, a four-year-old,
140-pound Alaskan Malamute/timber wolf mix owned
and trained by Steve Woodley.
Born in Oregon, Kavic appeared in such TV shows
as SENTINEL, STARGATE, DEAD MAN'S GUN, FIRST
WAVE and SLEEPWALKERS.
The TV series was inspired by Jack London’s
novel "Call of the Wild" about Buck, a huge
four-year-old Scottish Shepherd-Saint Bernard
cross-breed who lived a life of ease at Judge
Miller's Santa Clara Valley estate until one
night he was stolen by Manuel, the estate's
Gardner and sold to the Alaska gold rush fields
as a pack animal.
