King - Beautiful chestnut thoroughbred on the
animal adventure NATIONAL VELVET/NBC/1960-62.
King (short for "Blaze King") belonged to Velvet Brown (Lori Martin), a
young girl living on a dairy farm in the Midwest whose dream was to someday
enter the Grand National Steeplechase. Mi Taylor (James McCallion), an
ex-jockey, costarred as King's trainer.
The series was based on the story "National Velvet" (1935) written by Enid
Bagnold which originally was set in England. Her story inspired a successful
MGM movie National Velvet (1944) starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey
Rooney.
The novel featured a piebald horse, a black & white pinto with large
distinct patches. King was changed to a sorrel gelding for the film.
