Samantha
Stephen's Necklace
-
Frequently worn piece of jewelry used by
housewife/witch Samantha Stephens (Elizabeth
Montgomery) on the fantasy series
BEWITCHED/ABC/1964-72. The sparkling trademark
puffed pave diamond heart pendant necklace (a 7/8 inch
item made of white gold or platinum) was given
to Montgomery about 1963 by her then husband
William Asher, the producer and director of the
show.
The necklace was incorporated into her
character's wardrobe when the show began and
continued to be worn throughout the series
(visible from Episode #2 through #101).
The
necklace was lost for a time and could not be
seen from episodes #102 - #105 until the show's
prop department had two rhinestone replicas
created as replacements.
Eventually, the heart
necklace was seen less and less (last seen on
episode #199) because of changing fashions which
covered up Sam's neck and chest area or possibly
it was because Montgomery and her husband Asher
were having marriage difficulties which
inevitably ended in divorce.
Samantha later wore
an "S" charm on a gold chain. The Samantha doll
made for the Madame Alexander Collection makes a
point of including a small heart necklace with
each of their Samantha Stephens collectibles.
TRIVIA NOTE:
On episode "Bewitched, Bothered and
Bewildered" on the occult drama BUFFY THE
VAMPIRE SLAYER, Xander Harris gives a silver
heart necklace to Cordelia at the Valentine's
Day dance held at the Bronze. Unfortunately,
Cordelia dumps him right after getting the
necklace. Bitter, Xander blackmails a witch
named Amy to cast a love spell on Cordelia. But
first Amy needs a personal object from Cordy, so
Xander retrieves the necklace and uses it as a
talisman to create the spell.
Amy: Diana... goddess of love and the hunt... I
pray to thee. Let my cries bind the heart of
Xander's beloved. (lowers the necklace into the
brew) May she neither rest nor sleep (the brew
sparks) until she submits to his will only.
Unfortunately, the spell misfires and makes
"all" the women in Sunnydale "except" Cordelia
attracted to Xander. Before the spell is finally
broken by Giles, a mob of lovesick women in
search of Xander (Willow and Buffy, among them),
ransack the town and almost kill Cordelia
because she spurned Xander's affections. ("I'd
rather see you dead than with that bitch!", sobs
an axe-wielding Willow).
