Lone Ranger's Ring, The - The premiere episode of the western adventure THE LONE RANGER/ABC/1949-57 recapped the origins of the frontier vigilante, The Lone Ranger. Part of the storyline talked about a sentimental keepsake worn on a chain about the neck of the Ranger. It seems that when the Lone Ranger was a youngster (then called John Reid) he nursed a wounded Indian brave named Tonto back to health after renegade Indians attacked the boy's village and killed his mother, and sisters. When Tonto was well, Reid gave him a horse to go find his father. Before leaving on his search, Tonto gave Reid a ring (adorned with the figure of a cross) as a good luck gift and vowed never to forget John Reid, whom Tonto called "Kemo Sabe" which meant "Trusty Scout." Years later Tonto found a wounded body of a Texas Ranger wearing a piece of flattened metal on a chain around his neck. Upon closer examination, Tonto discovered it was the remnants of the same ring he had given away years earlier. Tonto tended to the Ranger's wounds and looked after him during his recovery. John Reid then adopted the masked guise of The Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore) and with the assistance of his faithful Indian companion Tonto (Jay Silverheels) battled outlaws and assisted the downtrodden amidst the southwestern United States in the 1800s.
