Yodeling Comedienne, The - Showbiz nickname of actress/comedienne Judy
Canova who played the part of a yodeling, hillbilly with straw hat and pigtails
in the 1940s Republic Pictures Scatterbrain, Sis Hopkins, Puddin' Head, Joan of
Ozark, Chatterbox, Sleepy Lagoon, Louisiana Hayride and Honeychile. Judy Canova,
who originally studied to be an opera singer, got her start in the 1935 movies
In Caliente and Broadway Gondelier and later starred for 12 years on THE JUDY
CANOVA SHOW, a successful NBC radio program. She made her first TV dramatic
appearance on the episode "Party Line" that aired May 29, 1960 on the suspense
anthology ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS/THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR/CBS/NBC/1955-65.
She died of cancer on August 5, 1983 at the age of sixty-six. Her daughter,
Diana Canova starred in the sitcoms FOOT IN THE DOOR/CBS/1983; I'M A BIG GIRL
NOW/ABC/1980-81; SOAP/ABC/1977-81; and THROB/SYN/1986-88.
