 Doorbells
- Many doorbells have been rung on the thousands of TV shows aired
over the years, but only a few doorbell sounds have been unique.
The
home doorbell of Jennifer Marlowe (Loni Anderson), the classy and
curvaceous radio station receptionist on WKRP IN
CINCINNATI/CBS/1978-82 rang out the romantic melody "Fly me to the
Moon."
The chimes of "Big Ben" could be heard on the apartment
doorbell of Jackie Rush (Deborah Van Valkenburgh) and Sarah Rush
(Lydia Cornell) on the sitcom TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT/ABC/SYN/1980-86.
The explosive groan from a "Foghorn" greeted visitors to the gothic
mansion of Gomez Addams (John Astin) on the bizarre sitcom THE
ADDAMS FAMILY/ABC/1964-66.
The droll undertaker character Digby
O'Dell on the sitcom THE LIFE OF RILEY/NBC/1949-58 owned a doorbell
that chimed the lively tune "Happy Days Are Here Again."
On the
sitcom THE BICKERSONS/SYN/1951 the doorbell to the home of gambler
Barney Gallop (Sam Lee) played the trumpet melody heard at the start
of a horse race.
The doorbell of the Petrie family on the sitcom THE
DICK VAN DYKE SHOW/CBS/1961-66 rings in the keys of E and G-flat
minor.
A variation on the doorbell appeared on the sitcom I'M
DICKENS...HE'S FENSTER/ABC/1962-63 when carpenter Archie Fenster
banged his familiar "Shave and a Haircut, Two Bits" rhythm (Bum-dee-dee-Bum-Bum,
Bum-Bum) as he entered the home of his friend Harry Dickens (John
Astin).

NEXT GENERATION features a musical melody when ever anyone tries to
access a crew's quarters. Listen
American author Rex Stout wrote a mystery
novel entitled "The Doorbell Rang", first published by Viking Press
in October 1965, It featured the adventures of Nero Wolfe, an
overweight detective with a fondness for food and orchids.
