Tom Servo (voice of Kevin Murphy) watched dreadful B movies with his friend,
lab technician Joel Robinson, the show's human host
and another robot named Crow (voice of Trace
Beaulieu).
Tom's body consisted of bits of an
old bubble-gum machine, a penny bank and a
flashlight. Crow's body was constructed from a
Lacrosse face mask, a plastic bowling pin and a
soap dish.
Both robots were built by Joel Robinson so he could alleviate
the boredom of space and to stave off the insanity that might
occur from watching the horrible movies projected in the Mystery
Science Theatre 30000 complex onboard the
Satellite of Love.
The robot's parts reflected the same
poor quality of the movies shown on the program
(for instance, Robots vs. the Aztec Mummy
(1959), and The Giant Spider Invasion
(1975).
Seen as silhouettes at the bottom of
the screen, Tom, Crow and Joel
(later replaced by Mike Nelson) spoofed the movies with a rapid
fire delivery of hip, irreverent one-liners.
Tom Servo and his sharp-tongued sidekicks moved to the SCI-FI
Channel in 1997.
