UNIT - Counter-intelligence agency located
behind the facade of "The Toy Boutique" on the
espionage
adventure A MAN CALLED SLOANE/NBC/1979-80.
Its chief operatives were:
Robert Conrad as Thomas Remington Sloane,
III, a handsome rouge who was good with his
fists and a gun. Thomas drove a cream-colored
Cord convertible.
Ji-Tu Cumbuku, as Torque who has a
bone-crushing stainless steel (in reality
aluminum) bionic hand equipped with drills,
saws, lock pick, laser beam and even a radio
transmitter whose antenna doubled as a spear.

R.
Sloane III
Both Thomas and Torque report to the
Director of UNIT (Dan O'Herlihy).
He assigned missions that targeted agents of KARTEL, a sinister organization.
Director of UNIT
Effie, the organization's
main computer (short for the E.F.I. Model 3000),
supplied information to its agents via a sexy
female voice (Michele Carey).
TRIVIA NOTE:
In the pilot episode "Death Ray 2000" UNIT was
based in Kentucky on a
rural farm that acted as a base of
operations for the Director and Effie the
computer. Thomas Sloane (played by Robert
Logan)
was the owner of Sloane and Son, Art
and Antiquities in Carmel, California. He
carries a gun made of Lucite that can go through
any weapons detector in the world. The bullets
are gas-fired and completely silent with the a muzzel
velocity of a Magnum.357. He also had a nifty
hand-held tape recorder that could
scramble and unscramble incoming telephone
messages.
In the pilot episode, Torque was a villain.
