Smoke Belching LocomotiveSuperman Locomotive - At the beginning of each episode of ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN/SYN/1953-57, the announcer introduced the program by saying "more powerful than a locomotive" to describe the super-strength of Superman, an alien being from the planet Krypton. The original series featured a black and white shot of a smoke-belching locomotive speeding down the rails. On the color episodes a Southern Pacific diesel engine was shown.  Trains also appeared in the plotlines of the Superman series and beyond. On the TV show, Superman saved Lois Lane from a train in the last episode. And when the character resurfaced in the 1978 film Superman starring Christopher Reeve, a young Clark Kent (Jeff East) outraces a passing train whose passengers coincidentally were Kirk Alyn as Lois Lane's father and Noel Neill as Lois Lane's Mother who appeared in earlier 1940s and 1950s Superman franchises. Further, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) used an abandoned underground train station as his hideout.
