The western adventure
BRONCO/ABC/1958-62 starred Ty Hardin as Bronco
Layne, an ex-Confederate Army officer who sought
adventure on the Texas plains in the days following the Civil
War.
During his travels, Bronco worked at number of
occupations, including a frontier guide, a
deputy, a miner, the leader of a wagon train, an
army scout and an undercover agent for the US
postal service.
These employment opportunities enabled Bronco to
met up with the likes of Billy the Kid,
Belle Starr, Cole Younger, Jesse James, John
Wesley Hardin, Theodore Roosevelt, and Wild Bill
Hickok.
Beside his trusty Colt .45 pistol (bearing with
inscription: "Courage is the Freedom of Honor"), Bronco carried
a gold pocket
watch that played the tune "Deep in the
Heart of Dixie." Inside the watch was a picture
of Redemption McNally (Kathleen Crowley), a former love from
Bronco's earlier days in Texas.
Bronco's friends were a cat named Elmira and
Enrique "Rickie" Cortez (Gerald Mohr) who was a partner with
Bronco in the Layne and Cortez General Store.
When Bronco got the itch to drift, he left his
cat and gold watch with Enrique until her
retuned from his journeys.

Theme Song Lyrics
Bronco! Bronco!
Tearin' across the Texas plain.
Bronco! Bronco! Bronco Layne.
Born down around the old panhandle,
Texas is where he grew to fame.
There ain't a horse that he can't handle,
That's how he got his name.
Bronco! Bronco!
Tearin' across the Texas plain.
Bronco! Bronco! Bronco Layne.
Next to a four square Texas twister,
You'd call a cyclone weak and mild,
You've never seen a twister, mister,
Till someone gets him riled.
Bronco! Bronco!
Tearin' across the Texas plain.
Bronco! Bronco! Bronco Layne.
Show me a gal who kissed him once,
And I'll show you a gal who's kissed him twice.
Once a city gal has kissed him twice,
She's dreamin' of shoes and rice.
Bronco! Bronco!
Tearin' across the Texas plain.
Bronco! Bronco! Bronco Layne.

TRIVIA NOTE: The BRONCO western
television series aired from September 23, 1958
to August 20, 1962, with a total of 68 episodes.
The Bronco character was created in reaction to
Clint Walker leaving his popular Warner Bros.
western CHEYENNE due to a contractual dispute
during the 1958-59 season.
During the interim, the show was renamed THE
CHEYENNE SHOW and featured reruns of CHEYENNE
episodes and new BRONCO programming.
When the legal issues were resolved in the
1959-60 season, Clint Walker resumed his role on
CHEYENNE and the BRONCO series received its own
timeslot and rotated with the SUGARFOOT and then
the CHEYENNE series until 1962.
Obituaries: Gerald Mohr - 11/08/1968
