Set in Wyoming of the 1870s, Dale Robertson starred as Ben Calhoun,
owner of the Buffalo Pass, Scalplock,
and Defiance Line, a near bankrupt, half-finished railroad carrier
(which he won in poker game) struggling for survival amidst an onslaught of Indians, outlaws,
crooked businessmen and rival railroad barons in the 1870s Wyoming
territory.
Other friends of Ben Calhoun included:
- Gary Collins as Dave Tarrant, a construction engineer.
- Roger Torree as Nils Torvald (Roger Torrey), a huge Scandinavian
crewman.
- Rob Random as Barnabas Rogers, a young orphan who idolized Ben
and served as a clerk.
- Ellen McRae as Julie Parsons, the freight station operator and
proprietor of the Scalplock General Store.
- Woodrow Parfrey as Holmes.

TRIVIA NOTE:
The TV movie pilot for the series entitled Scalplock first
aired on The ABC Sunday Night Movie on April 10, 1966.
In 1924,
John Ford directed a western film entitled
The Iron Horse.
Starring George O'Brien, the film chronicled the efforts
of surveyor Davey Brandon, as he helps build the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways across the western
expanse of the United States in the year 1862.
The Native American Indians called the locomotive the "Iron Horse."
