The struggles of the Pride family, headed by
widower Benjamin Pride (Barry Sullivan) who moved from
Springfield, Ohio to a new homestead in Lawrence
County, Kansas in the days following the Civil
War.
Members of the Pride clan included:
- Andrew Prine as Timothy, 24, the eldest son, Timothy
- Brenda Scott as Midge, 18, a daughter
- Kelly Corcoran as Kip, 8, a son
- Kathryn Hays as Elizabeth Reynolds, Benjamin's new wife
- Glenn Corbett as Chance Reynolds, Elizabeth's brother
- Charles Seel as Grandpa Pride

TRIVIA NOTE: Andrew Prine and Brenda
Scott were married in 1965 but divorced just as
the TV series began production. Kathyrn Hays
later appeared as Kim Hughes on the soap opera
