The point of any ad campaign is to focus on the sponsor's ultimate purpose: to
lure customers to buy their products. For example, the McDonald's Corporation
wants us to know that "We deserve a break today...at McDonald's. The General
Motors Corporation earnestly believe (and so want us to believe as well) that
their Chevrolet automobiles are built "Like a Rock." And the Kellogg's Cereal
Company in Battle Creek, Michigan wants us to taste the goodness of Sugar
Frosted Flakes so that we, too, will concur that their cereal products are
GRE-A-A-A-A-T!" (courtesy of their mascot Tony the Tiger).
And don't forget such runner up jingles as "My Bologna has a first name its
O-S-C-A-R..."; or "My dog's bigger than your dog, My dog's bigger than your";
and the ever popular "I'm a Pepper, he's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, we're a
Pepper, wouldn't you like to be a Pepper, too, Dr. Pepper."
Now whether or not we choose to heed the lure of the slogan or jingle, we all
must admit that some of these ad spots are pretty clever, and often funny or
down right memorable. So, for those who like myself, become nostalgic over such
tunes and words of wisdom, I offer up the following collection of advertising
slogans, Jingles and catchphrases from the past century (and a few from the New
Millennium). Most of the them were broadcast on television, while some date ever
earlier from the days of radio.
When ever possible, hyperlinks to the companies web sites are provided. If a
company no longer exists, I have linked to a site that chronicles the history of
the product. So until next time remember "Nothing beats a great pair of L'eggs."
Enjoy!
