Golden Pit Awards - First bestowed in 1987 the Golden Pit
Awards satirized TV programs, commercials and movies that "offend
millions of ethnic Americans mostly through negative stereotyping,"
such as depicting Blacks stealing bicycles, Jews arguing over prices,
Italians involved in crime and Irish drunk in bars.
The trophy awarded was a white Styrofoam bust with a peach pit
dangling from a blue ribbon.
Winners were selected from hundreds of entries by members of the 66
groups belonging to the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations
such as NAACP and the United Farm Workers.
