People's Choice Awards - Annual award given to
the most popular television, movie and music
stars as chosen by a Gallup Poll of more than
5,000 people nationwide (representing more
that 202 million Americans). Manufactured in
Sweden by Orreforsch Crystal, the trophy
(valued at $3,000), symbolizes a pair of
clapping hands (as in "the winning choices are
in the hands of the people"). The US Customs
Department allows the awards into the country
duty free. Renowned Orreforsch artist, Olle
Alberius, designed the "clapping hands" image
that appears inside each sculpture. The
People's Choice Award was founded in 1974 when
a team of producers led by Bob Strivers
brainstormed an awards ceremony that would
give the public at large the ability to honor
their favorite performers (in 18 categories).
The first People's Choice awards show was
aired in March of 1975. In the 1990s with the
advent of the Internet, voting for your
favorite performer is now possible over the
World Wide Web.
