Holling on Jesse's TrailJesse the Bear - Grizzly Bear mentioned but never seen on episodes of the NORTHERN EXPOSURE/CBS/1990-95. Jesse the Bear roamed the woods outside the town of Cicely, Alaska. His paw pattern was very distinctive because he was missing two toes, shot off by Holling Vincoeur (John Cullum), the owner of the local tavern called The Brick. Jesse debuted on the episode "A Kodiak Moment" (8/23/90). On the episode "Final Frontier" (4/27/92), a local Native American informed Holling that Jesse the bear died, thus upsetting Holling's vow to kill the bear himself. Refusing to accept the bear's death, Holling set off to find the cave where Jesse lived known as Widowmaker Cave. During his quest, Holling realized that Jesse represented all of man's fears. And so, proud of himself for having faced them directly, Holling returned home at peace. Holling's eulogized Jesse saying “You were a bear. You were a great big bear. You were wild and you were free. Godspeed, Jesse.”
