  Birds - Miscellaneous

Winken, Blinken and Nod - Pet birds raised by youngster Opie Taylor (Ron Howard) on episode No. 101 "Opie the Birdman" broadcast September 30, 1963 on the sitcom THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW/CBS/1960-68. When Opie kills a bird with a slingshot outside his house, his father sheriff Andy Taylor (Andy Griffith) confronts him and says: "I'm not going to give you a whipping [Opens a window] Do you hear that? That's them young birds chirping for their mama that's not coming back. You just listen to that awhile." Opie later decides to raise the baby birds until they can fly away on their own. He named the birds Winken, Blinken and Nod (after the characters in a nursery rhyme). When Opie finally released the birds he sadly notes how empty his bird cage looked. His father Andy however, takes the positive view and says "but don't the trees seem nice and full?" Opie Taylor also owned a pet parakeet named Dinkie, a lizard named Oscar; and a dog  named Gulliver.
