You Never Hear the Bullet - The title of a book to be written by Tommy Gillis (played by James Callahan) on an episode of the military sitcom M*A*S*H/CBS/1972-83. Tommy was an old friend of surgeon Dr. “Hawkeye” Pierce (Alan Alda) who joined the army in the 1950s to fight in the Korean War and to get the low down on war for his book You Never Hear the Bullet to be written from a “soldier’s point of view.” Unfortunately, Tommy dies on the operating table in front of Hawkeye. Note: A Marine named Wendell (played by Ron Howard) lied about his age to enlist in an episode entitled “Sometimes You Hear the Bullet.”
