Death - The first televised "death in the ring" was telecast March 24, 1962 when Benny "Kid" Paret died at the hands of Emile Griffith in a Madison Square Garden boxing match covered on ABC's FIGHT OF THE WEEK. Special rerun equipment replayed the boxer's death blow over and over for a nation of shocked viewers.

The first TV "reality show" death occurred in 2010 when Phil Harris, 53, the hard-living captain of the crab fishing vessel Corneila Marie from the unscripted Discovery Chanel series DEADLIEST CATCH had a stroke on January 29th. His subsequent treatment and death nearly two weeks later on February 9th were recorded as part of the program.

Some of his last commentary: "I'm not gonna be here for very much longer. That's a fact. I smoke and I drink. I've done every drug known to man. I mean, hell -- it catches up to you."

[His sons, Jake and Josh Harris post to the public]

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad -- Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers."
