Snagglepuss -
Silly Shakespearian lion featured as a component series of the Hanna-Barbera
cartoon YOGI BEAR/SYN/1961-62. Snagglepuss lives in a cave on
Cave Street. He stands upright and wears cuffs, collar and a string
tie. His silly lisping voice (provided by Daws Butler) was similar
to that of Bert Lahr's portrayal of the Cowardly Lion in the film
Wizard of Oz (1939). Snagglepuss' catchphrase is "Heaven's to
Murgatroid!"
Whenever Snagglepuss makes a hastily retreat, he
declares "Exit--(fill in some remark)--Stage left" (or right). Snagglepuss' main nemesis is the master hunger Major Minor.
Snagglepuss originally appeared as a supporting player on
THE HUCKLEBERRY HOUND SHOW/SYN/1958-62 and QUICK DRAW MCGRAW /SYN/1959-62.
A few year later, Snagglepuss could be seen with other Hanna-Barbera stars on shows like
YOGI'S GANG (1973), SCOOBY'S ALL-STAR LAFF-A LYMPICS (1977-1979),
and YOGI'S TREASURE HUNT (1985-1988).
The voice of Snagglepuss was recycled for a Revolutionary War era
ghost on the cartoon series THE FUNKY PHANTOM (1971).
