BING, Chandler Muriel
(Friends)
Apartment # 19 (or # 4)
New York, NY
(Greenwich Village)

Chandler is a single, business executive who does data processing (“data configuration & statistical factoring“) for a large unnamed multinational firm. His job involves checking out his ANUS (Annual Net Usage Statistics) and WENUS (Weekly Estimated Net Usage Statistics).

An unrelenting jokester [he uses jokes as a defense mechanism when he's uncomfortable], Chandler first shared his apartment with a guy named Kip (who ran off to get married) and then with Joey Tribianni, a dim-witted, but loveable struggling actor. They are close friends with Monica Geller and Rachel Green who live across the hall in apartment #20 [earlier seen as #5]. The mailing label on Chandler's TV Guide subscription [which the girls often steal] reads c/o "Miss Chanandeler Bong."

Chandler met Monica through her paleontologist brother, Ross Geller who roomed with Chandler in college in the 1980s. It was Chandler's rude remark about Monica being fat years earlier, that motivated Monica to change her eating habits and loose a ton of weight. Becoming a chef, Monica turned her passion for food, to cooking it for other people rather than eating it herself.

When Chandler speaks, he put emphasis on certain words in the sentence. For example, "That is SO not true!" "Could I BE more wrong" or "How many cameras are ON you?" (in reference to Monica remarks that the video camera makes a person look five pounds heavier when shooting their image.)

For relaxation, Chandler visits the local cafe called Central Perk to hang out with his friends where he orders coffee with 2 Equals and one cream. Otherwise, he can be found at Monica's apartment or sitting for hours with his roommate Joey in their lounge chairs and watching TV shows filled with sexy babes from Baywatch, Wonder Woman and Xena: Warrior Princess. Chandler and Joey jointly cared for a pet duck and a chicken [named “Little Jasmine” after Yasmine Bleeth on Baywatch].

As to his ancestry, Chandler is half Swedish and half Scottish. When Monica asked “Where do you come from?” Chandler replied “My grandfather is Swedish and my grandmother is a tiny little bunny.“ Chandler’s father is gay (he appears in an all-male review called “Viva La Gayness”) and his mother, Nora [an alcoholic blond who chases 20-year-old boys] wrote the classic pulp novel Mistress Bitch. Her maiden name is Tyler. Nora is the one who bought Chandler his first condoms which she indiscreetly told the world while on an interview segment of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Nora also kissed Ross which caused a storm of controversy with Chandler when he found out. Their friendship, however, survived the incident.

Chandler:

If I'm gonna be an old, lonely man, I'm gonna need a thing,  you know, a hook, like that guy on the subway who eats his own face. So I figure I'll be Crazy Man with a Snake, y'know. Crazy Snake Man. And I'll get more snakes, call them my babies, kids will walk past my place, they will run. "Run away from Crazy Snake Man!," they will shout.

In his youth, Chandler attended a boarding school with 400 boys. Unfortunately, Chandler's fastidious clothing and bouncy mannerisms made people think he was gay. But he was not - although he has a "quality." Chandler’s favorite book as a child was “The Velveteen Rabbit.”  Unlike other kids who cut the lawn to earn allowance money, Chandler earned his money by plucking the eyebrows of his father and his business partners. Once Chandler entered a Vanilla Ice look-a-like contest and won.

Oddly, Chandler was born with three nipples. Because his "Nubbin" [what he called it] was such a curiosity, when people learned of the third nipple, they asked questions like "What's it shaped like?", "Is there a hair on it?" and "Can you flick it?" Tired of such questions, Chandler got creative and told them "Pressure on the third nipple opens the delivery entrance to magical land of Narnia." He later had the ‘nubbin’ removed.
