Pinky Lee's
Derby -
Pinky Lee, a popular children's show host of the 1950s wore a
trademark checkered jacket, shirt, pants and hat as he performed his
energetic act on THE PINKY LEE SHOW/NBC/50 & 54-56. He got the idea
of wearing this black and white hat when he donned a checkered hat
during a 1930s engagement in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Having lost
his own hat, Lee borrowed the checkered hat from a child whose
mother gladly let him keep it.
In the 1950s Max Hess, owner of Hess's Department Store in Allentown, Pennsylvania offered Pinky
$10,000 for his hat. Although the hat was tattered and ready to fall apart, he declined to sell it. See also -
