Skipper's Hat, The - Each episode of the sitcom GILLIGAN'S ISLAND/CBS/1964-67 would invariably show a scene where marooned charter boat captain Jonas "The Skipper" Grumby (Alan Hale) would take off his hat and slam it over the head of his bumbling and often frustrating first mate Gilligan (Bob Denver). When the series ended in 1967 Alan Hale had the hat bronzed and then presented it to the program's producer as a memento. Inscribed on the base of the hat was a metal plaque which read: "To Sherwood Schwartz from the 'Skipper' Alan Hale." Alan Hale adopted the persona of the Skipper in his personal life and could always be seen wearing a captain's hat. Alan's hat size was 7 and 3/8 inches. See also - "The Skipper's Ring

TRIVIA NOTE: While Alan Hale, Jr. was alive, he was the owner and proud proprietor of a restaurant called "The Lobster Barrel" during the 1970s and 1980s. His eatery was located at 826 N. La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA. amidst Hollywood's famed "Restaurant Row" district. Wearing his signature nautical hat, Hale (a.k.a. The Skipper") gladly signed autographs for his customers while they waited to dine on his seafood cuisine.
