Personal "PC" Computers

Altair 8800 - Considered the first "personal" home computer ever created. Designed by electrical engineer, H. Edward Roberts, the Altair 8800 appeared on the January 1975 cover of Popular Electronics magazine.

The name "Altair" was inspired by the planet Altair VI on the episode No. 34 "Amok Time" (Stardate 3372.7) on the sci-fi series STAR TREK/NBC/1966-69. The planet was later mentioned in Starfleet Academy's "Kobayashi Maru" training simulation. in the motion picture Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982).

TRIVIA NOTE: Altair IV was the forbidden planet in the constellation Aquila in the sci-fi movie The Forbidden Planet (1956). See also - ROBOTS: "Robby the Robot"
