Jeannie the Genie - Beautiful blond genie dressed
in a harem costume on the fantasy series I DREAM OF JEANNIE/NBC/1965-70.

Born in Baghdad on April 1, 64 BC, Jeannie was imprisoned by the powerful Blue
Djinn when she refused his proposal of marriage. Her punishment was to be turned
into a genie, imprisoned in a
bottle and forced to live an eternity of
loneliness.
Some two thousand years later, Tony Nelson, a NASA astronaut crash-lands on a
desert island and finds her bottle on the beach while attempting to make an SOS
rescue signal. When he pulls the stopper from the bottle, out comes a stream of
pink smoke which transforms into a gorgeous genie who speaks the words that most
men would long to hear..."Thou may ask anything of thy slave, Master."

Now Tony was not your everyday animal, he was a gentleman and so he declined the
genie's generous offer and set her free. Seeing that Tony was something special,
she hitched a ride back to the mainland on the helicopter that she just "zapped"
up from nowhere and soon took up residence at Tony's bachelor pad at 1020 Palm
Drive in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Tony: |
Jeannie's turned against me. |
|
Roger: |
She can't turn against you. You're her master.
She has to obey you. |
|
Nelson: |
Yeh, who says so? |
|
Roger: |
I don't know, maybe it's in the genie manual. |
|
Tony: |
Then how come she's deliberately disobeyed me...
|
|
Roger: |
Maybe she wasn't issued a genie manual
|
With the ability to create any needed object with the blink of an eye and to
travel through time and space, Jeannie treated Tony to a non-stop roller coaster
ride of strange encounters and adventures. Despite all the traumas and near
heart attack situations that Jeannie put Tony through, the two soon came to love
one another and were married on December 2, 1969.

Dr. Bellows |
The only other person who knew the true identity and abilities of Jeannie was
astronaut Roger Healey, Tony's best friend. Dr. Alfred Bellows, a NASA
psychiatrist, at times saw some of the incredible magic that Jeannie displayed,
but he could never quite get anyone else to believe him or discover its source.
Other magical characters to pop into Tony Nelson's home were Jeannie's
mischievous dark-haired twin sister,
who also coveted the affections of Tony Nelson; Great Uncle Sule of Bensengi;
Uncle Asmir; Jeannie's father; and Djinn Djinn, Jeannie's, ferocious little dog
who turns invisible and chomps at the pant legs of anyone wearing a uniform.

TRIVIA NOTE: Barbara Eden reprised her role as Jeannie in the made for TV movies
I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later (10/25/85) with Jeannie and Tony (Wayne
Rogers) as parents of teenagers; and in I Still Dream of Jeannie (fall of 1991)
where Jeannie searched for a temporary new master. There was also an animated
Saturday morning cartoon spin off JEANNIE/CBS/1973-75 where a teenage surfer
found a bottle containing a genie (voice of Julie McWhirter). A remake of this
classic 60s sitcom is planned for 2008 release.
