"When I Say I Beg Your
Pardon, Then I'll Come Back To You" -
The title of an awful song (to match his awful
violin playing) once written by comedian Jack
Benny on his comedy program THE JACK BENNY
PROGRAM/CBS/1950-65.

On a number of radio and TV episodes Jack
tried his darnedest to get various musicians to
record his terrible song. The episode "When You
Say 'I Beg Your Pardon'…" 03-02-52 featured
guest Frank Sinatra, Danny Kaye, George Burns
and Groucho Marx who sing a riotous version of
Jack's song from Palm Springs. The radio spots
are available on 20 CD set entitled The
Ultimate Jack Benny Collection.
On the TV episode No. 158 "Jack Writes a
Song" 12/17/1961, Jack finds a song he wrote
years ago "When You Say 'I Beg Your Pardon',
Then I'll Come Back To You. When you ask me to
forgive you, I'll return..." and tries to get
his guest star Dimitri Tiomkin to write an
arrangement of it.
And on the 10/23/1962 episode, Jack convinces
his guest star Lawrence Welk to perform his
song, but Jack doesn't like Welk's polka version
of the song.
'I Beg Your
Pardon' Song Lyrics
When you say 'I beg your pardon'
Then I'll come back to you
When you ask me to forgive you I'll return
Like the swallows in Cerreno return to
Capistrano
For you my heart will always
always always always yearn
When you say that you are sorry
then I will understand
'Neath the harvest moon we'll pledge our love
anew
Oh my darling though were parted
Come back to whence we started
And sweetheart then I'll come back to you
