Colonel Potter's Photograph
- The military situation comedy M*A*S*H/CBS/1972-83
featured veteran army officer Colonel Sherman Potter (Harry Morgan)
who prominently displayed on his desk, a framed
black & white photograph of his wife, Mildred
whom Potter saluted every day as a sign of love
and respect.
In reality, the photograph was that
of actress Spring Byington, the former star of
DECEMBER BRIDE/CBS/1954-59. Harry Morgan got his
start on that series playing a wisecracking
insurance agent named Pete Porter who constantly
complained to his next door neighbor Lily Ruskin
(Spring Byington) about his wife, Gladys.
On the
sequel series AFTERMASH/CBS/1983-84 both Barbara
Townsend and Ann Pitoniak played the role of
Potter's wife, Mildred.
TRIVIA NOTE:
On the sci-fi series GENE RODDENBERRY’s
EARTH; FINAL CONFLICT Dr. Julianne Belman
(played by Majel Barrett) displays a photograph
of her husband on her desk. The picture is of
Gene Roddenberry, the creator of the STAR TREK
series and Barrett’s real life husband [now
deceased].
