The Borg - A ruthless race of cyborgs (half-humanoid/robotic) on the sci-fi series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/SYN/1987-94. Soon after birth each Borg is fitted with bionic enhancers which fuses their future life to serving the goals of their race as a whole, thus eliminating any individuality. A typical conversation with a Borg would go like this "We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your vessel. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile!" Their first contact with humans occurred on episode No.142 "Q Who" when an alien named "Q" (John DeLancie) transported the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D across the galaxy to the domain of the Borg to impress upon the earthlings their vulnerability and insignificance in the universe. The Borg traveled in huge cube-shaped vessels that dwarfed other star craft. One such ship attacked the center of Federation in episodes No.174/175 "The Best of Both Worlds" while attempting to absorb and control their civilization. During this encounter Captain Jean Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) of the Starship Enterprise-D was abducted by the Borg, named Locutus ("I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile. Your life as it has been is over. From this time forward, you will service us.") and fitted with bionic parts which controlled his will and extracted all Picard's tactical and military knowledge. With this information the Borg engaged the Fleet of warships sent to protect Earth from this alien menace. The space battle at WOLF 359 ended with most of the Federation defense craft damaged or inoperative, leaving the Borg free to attack Earth. The Borg were ultimately defeated when a command to "Sleep" was discretely transmitted to the crew of the Borg vessel. Just as Captain Picard was rescued from the Borg starship, it self-destructed. The Borg later appeared on episode No.123 "I, Borg" and the finale of sixth season on episode No.152/153 "The Descent Part I & II." The Borg resurfaced on the motion picture First Contact (1996) with a plan (that ultimately failed) to travel back in time and conquer the Earth while in a primitive stage of space travel development. In 1997 STAR TREK VOYAGER/UPN/1995-2001 introduced a Borg crew member known as Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), a human abducted and assimilated by the Borg as a child. Her human name was Anika Hanson. After removing most of her Borg implants, she began her gradual readjustment into the human culture. On the February 17, 1999 two-hour VOYAGER episode "Dark Frontier" the inside machinations of the Borg civilization were revealed as the nefarious Borg Queen (played by Susanna Thompson) tried to re-assimilate Seven of Nine back into the hive-like collective. The Borg's nemesis were Species 8472, an alien race that kicked the Borg's cybernetic ass when the Borg attempted to conquer them.
