Batgirl - Behind the dark-rimmed glasses of Gotham City librarian Barbara "Babs" Gordon (Yvonne Craig), lurked the karate-kicking crime fighter who debuted during the 1967-68 season of the fantasy adventure BATMAN/ABC/1966-68.

Batgirl, a.k.a. the daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon (Neil Hamilton), raced about Gotham City on a souped up "Bat" motor cycle as she battled the likes of the villainous Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman.

Her secret identity (known only to Alfred the Butler) was a constant source of speculation to Batman and Robin who were dying to discover who this leather clad crusader was in real-life.

The Batgirl character first appeared in the No.359 issue of DC Detective Comics. A similar character called Batwoman debuted in DC comics No.233. Her alter ego was Kathy Kane.

TRIVIA NOTE: On a 1991 edition of the syndicated magazine-of-the-air program HARD COPY, it was reported that Michelle Kaminsky, a 20-year-old woman that the police called "Batgirl" was being sought in regards to a series of crimes including murder. She earned her nickname because she had a ring of bats around her upper left arm and a tattooed vampire bite around her neck complete with blood droplets. Among her possessions, the police found photographs of Adam West (a.k.a. TVs "Batman").

In the motion picture Batman and Robin (1997) Alicia Silverstone played the role of the beautiful blonde niece of Alfred the Butler, Barbara Wilson who became the crime fighter known as Batgirl.
